About Moonlight Beach
Located at the western end of B Street in downtown Encinitas, Moonlight Beach is one of the most popular and family-friendly beaches along the North County San Diego coastline. Its wide sandy shoreline, convenient facilities, and proximity to downtown Encinitas make it a favorite destination for both local residents and visitors.
Moonlight Beach has been a gathering place for more than a century. The beach reportedly received its name in the early 1900s, when Encinitas residents began visiting the shoreline for nighttime picnics and social gatherings under the moonlight. The area later became an important recreational center for the growing coastal community. A dance pavilion and bathhouse once stood near the beach, and lumber from the old structure was eventually reused to build the distinctive Encinitas Boathouses during the late 1920s.
Today, Moonlight Beach offers considerably more amenities than many Southern California beaches. Visitors will find restrooms, outdoor showers, picnic facilities, a children’s playground, volleyball courts, a tennis court, and a concession offering food, drinks, and beach-equipment rentals. Fire rings are also available on a first-come, first-served basis and are popular for evening beach bonfires.
The beach is ADA accessible and provides year-round lifeguard services. Free beach wheelchairs are available on a first-come, first-served basis from the Moonlight Beach Marine Safety Center.
Parking is available in the beach parking lot and along nearby streets, although spaces can fill quickly on warm summer weekends. Visitors arriving early generally have the best chance of finding convenient parking.
Encinitas Weather
San Diego has some of the best weather in the world. Temperatures remain mild throughout the winter and summer.
Most rain falls between December and April. May and June are often very cloudy and cool as the marine layer covers the beach communities. This is caused by the deserts warming up and pulling the clouds and fog over the coast. There can be weeks without seeing any sun at all during this time of the year. Often these two months are referred to as “May gray” and “June gloom”.
Summertime high temperatures are generally in the 70s and 80s with night time lows in the 60s. Winter cools off with highs in the low to mid 60s and lows in the 50s during the night. Rarely does the temperature exceed 90 degrees or fall into the 30s at night.
Occasionally a weather phenomena called a “Santa Ana” will drive temperatures near 100 degrees and are often accompanied by very high, near hurricane force, winds.
This area is not prone to high winds except when a large, strong storm moves through or a Santa Ana weather event happens.
Occasionally a tropical storm or hurricane will influence the weather but it is very rare to experience a direct hit in this area.
