About the Crystal Pier
Crystal Pier is one of San Diego’s most recognizable coastal landmarks, extending into the Pacific Ocean from the heart of Pacific Beach, just north of Mission Beach. With its historic cottages perched above the waves, the pier offers a glimpse into San Diego’s early beach-resort era while providing sweeping views of the coastline.
Construction of the pier began in the 1920s as part of an effort to attract visitors and new residents to the developing Pacific Beach area. Originally known as Pickering’s Pleasure Pier, it opened in 1927 and at various times featured amusement attractions and the Crystal Ballroom. In 1930, cottages were added directly over the ocean, creating what became the Crystal Pier Hotel & Cottages. The distinctive cottages remain one of the pier’s best-known features today. The property has been family-owned since 1961.
Crystal Pier is also connected to neighboring Mission Beach, San Diego by the popular oceanfront boardwalk. The paved route stretches for approximately three miles from South Mission Beach through Mission Beach and Pacific Beach, making it popular with walkers, runners, bicyclists and skaters.
Mission Beach offers numerous visitor amenities, including public restrooms, outdoor showers, lifeguard stations, picnic areas, sand volleyball courts and public parking. Nearby Belmont Park, established in 1925, features the historic Giant Dipper wooden roller coaster along with rides, games, restaurants and shops. Visitors can also enjoy swimming, surfing, bodyboarding, biking and miles of sandy beach.
Parking can be difficult during summer weekends and holidays, so arriving early is recommended. The Mission Beach/Pacific Beach boardwalk has an 8 mph speed limit, and alcohol and glass containers are prohibited on San Diego beaches. Together, Crystal Pier, Pacific Beach and Mission Beach provide one of San Diego’s classic Southern California beach experiences.
San Diego Weather
San Diego has some of the best weather in the world. Temperatures remain mild throughout the winter and summer.
Most rain falls between December and April. May and June are often very cloudy and cool as the marine layer covers the beach communities. This is caused by the deserts warming up and pulling the clouds and fog over the coast. There can be weeks without seeing any sun at all during this time of the year. Often these two months are referred to as “May gray” and “June gloom”.
Summertime high temperatures are generally in the 70s and 80s with night time lows in the 60s. Winter cools off with highs in the low to mid 60s and lows in the 50s during the night. Rarely does the temperature exceed 90 degrees or fall into the 30s at night.
Occasionally a weather phenomena called a “Santa Ana” will drive temperatures near 100 degrees and are often accompanied by very high, near hurricane force, winds.
This area is not prone to high winds except when a large, strong storm moves through or a Santa Ana weather event happens.
Occasionally a tropical storm or hurricane will influence the weather but it is very rare to experience a direct hit in this area.
