About Waimea Bay
Located on Oahu’s famous North Shore, Waimea Bay is known for beauty and massive waves. This scenic bay attracts surfers and beachgoers throughout the year.
Waimea Bay is legendary for big-wave surfing. During winter, waves can reach 30 to 50 feet (9 to 15 meters) or more. The best surfing conditions occur between November and February, when powerful swells roll in from the Pacific. Only very experienced surfers should challenge these massive waves.
Summer months bring a completely different experience. From May to September, the water becomes calm and glassy. Visitors enjoy swimming, snorkeling, and cliff jumping from the famous Waimea Rock.
Water temperatures remain comfortable throughout the year. During winter, temperatures range from 76 to 78 degrees. In summer, the water warms up to 79 to 82 degrees.
Waimea Bay hosts The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational, one of the most famous surf competitions in the world. This event only happens when waves reach at least 40 feet (12 meters), making it a rare and exciting spectacle.
Typically, early mornings offer the best conditions for surfing or sightseeing. Crowds get bigger as the day progresses, especially during big swells.
