About the Southernmost Point

The Southernmost Point landmark is a famous attraction in Key West, Florida. Located at the corner of Whitehead and South streets, it marks the southernmost part of the continental U.S. Visitors from around the world stop here for photos, often waiting in long lines for the perfect shot.

The landmark was established in 1983. Before that, a simple sign marked the location. To create a more permanent marker, a large concrete buoy was placed at the site. Today, it stands as one of the most photographed spots in Key West.

Additionally, the landmark holds great significance. It sits just 90 miles north of Cuba, making it the closest U.S. point to the island. Many visitors appreciate the cultural and historical connection between Key West and Cuba. The marker also serves as a symbol of the island’s maritime history.

Visitors can enjoy several activities nearby. Strolling along the waterfront provides scenic ocean views. The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum is just a short walk away. Mallory Square offers shopping, dining, and famous sunset celebrations.
