About Cozumel
Cozumel is a stunning island off of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. Located in the Caribbean Sea, it is famous for clear waters and coral reefs. Visitors enjoy a mix of natural beauty, history, and adventure. Many people come to Cozumel as a laid back and quieter option when compared to nearby Cancun.
The island offers plenty of exciting activities. Snorkeling and scuba diving are popular due to the vibrant marine life. The Mesoamerican Reef, the second-largest in the world, is home to colorful fish and sea turtles. Deep-sea fishing and glass-bottom boat tours are also great options.
In addition, history lovers will find fascinating ruins to explore. The San Gervasio ruins, once a sacred Mayan site, reveal the island’s rich past. Inland there are the Tulum, Coba and Chichen Itza ruins that are perfect for a day trip.
Cozumel Weather
The weather in Cozumel ranges from pleasant in the winter to very hot and humid in the summer. The least amount of rain occurs between December and May. The intense heat and humidity starts in June and continues through the summer well into September.
Hurricane season starts in June and runs through October with a slight chance of a storm in November. October has the most rain and December and January has the most wind.
Temperatures range from the upper 70s in the winter to the high 80s, and occasionally the low 90s, in the summer. I have found that the best time to visit is in February and March. This time of the year has the least amount of rain, wind and humidity and is warm but not overly hot. In addition, kids are still in school and the spring break crowd has not arrived yet.
If your plans include exploring the Mayan ruins, located in the center of the Yucatan Peninsula and east from Cancun, it is strongly recommended to avoid the hot and humid months because the temperatures and humidity increase significantly as compared to the beach communities.
