About Akumal Beach
Akumal is a small coastal town in Mexico’s Riviera Maya. Located south of Cancun between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, it is known for its clear waters and laid back atmosphere. Visitors enjoy a quiet, natural setting with plenty of outdoor activities.
Snorkeling in Akumal Bay is very populear. The calm, shallow waters are home to sea turtles, colorful fish, and coral reefs. Kayaking and paddleboarding are also great ways to explore the coastline. For diving, nearby cenotes offer crystal-clear freshwater caves to discover.
The beach in Akumal are stunningly beautiful. The white sand combined with turquoise water create a perfect spot for relaxation. Yal-Ku Lagoon, a mix of freshwater and seawater, is excellent for snorkeling. The nearby Akumal Monkey Sanctuary provides a fun wildlife experience.
For dining, Akumal offers many great choices. La Buena Vida is a beachfront restaurant with fresh seafood and tropical drinks. Another great option is Turtle Bay Café, known for its delicious breakfast and homemade pastries. For authentic Mexican flavors, El Ultimo Maya serves traditional dishes full of rich spices.
Besides great food, Akumal is close to amazing attractions. The ancient ruins of Tulum and Coba are a short drive away. Visitors can also explore the underground rivers of Rio Secreto. Nature lovers will enjoy the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, home to diverse wildlife. Nearby, there are also several adventure theme parks such as Xel-Ha, Xplor and several more. Many of these parks are all inclusive and make for a great day trip.
Akumal Weather
The weather in Akumal is very similar to its neighbor Cancun, located just to the north. Temperatures range from pleasant in the winter to very hot and humid in the summer. The least amount of rain occurs between December and May. The intense heat and humidity starts in June and continues through the summer well into September.
Hurricane season starts in June and runs through October with a slight chance of a storm in November. October has the most rain and December and January has the most wind.
Temperatures range from the upper 70s in the winter to the high 80s, and occasionally the low 90s, in the summer. I have found that the best time to visit is in February and March. This time of the year has the least amount of rain, wind and humidity and is warm but not overly hot. In addition, kids are still in school and the spring break crowd has not arrived yet.
If your plans include exploring the Mayan ruins, located in the center of the Yucatan Peninsula and east from Cancun, it is strongly recommended to avoid the hot and humid months because the temperatures and humidity increase significantly as compared to the beach communities.
