About Paia Bay

Paia bay is located on the north shore of Maui Hawaii and is a world famous surfing and boogie boarding spot.  The north shore does not have any surrounding islands to protect it from huge waves that usually roll in during winter storms.  Surf can also be very large in the summer and fall should tropical storms or hurricanes pass to the north of the island.

In the winter, October through April, waves can reach 10 to 15 feet plus.  This is the best time to surf if you are an experienced surfer.  In the summer, May through September, waves are much smaller at 1 to 4 feet, unless there is a nearby storm.    Summer is the best time for boogie boarding, swimming and less experienced surfers.

The beach is known for strong shore breaks and rip currents.  Always check on surf conditions before entering the water.  Unless you are a strong swimmer, it is recommended that this beach be avoided unless the water is very calm.  Also keep in mind, that ocean conditions can change quickly and what is calm one minute, can become dangerous the next.

The water temperature remains comfortable throughout the year ranging from 75 to 81 degrees.

Paia Bay and the north shore are often very windy and therefore this is a popular place for kite surfers.  Just watching from the shoreline is a great experience as surfers zig and zag their way through the choppy surf at high rates of speed.

Paia Weather

Paia doesn’t have any mountains right next to it to squeeze out the rain therefore the area receives a decent amount of rainfall but nothing like the rain forests.

Most rain comes between December and April when strong storms move across the island from the west.  Summertime has the least amount of rain but there is enough to keep everything lush and green.

This is a very windy area and strong winds usually blow towards the south between the Haleakala volcano to the east and mountains to the west.

Temperatures are always pleasant and rarely cold.  Highs range from the low to upper 80s to the 70s during a cold snap.  Low temperatures range from the mid 60s to mid 70s.  Rarely does it get above 90 or below 60.  Add in the wind and the area is usually very pleasant even when the temperatures climb.
