About Napili Bay

Napili Bay is located on the drier, western side of Maui.  It is located just a few miles north of Lahaina and south of Kapalua and is a great beach for small children and families.

The bay is relatively small with rocky points to the north and south.  It has a crescent shaped beach with a nearby offshore reef that runs between the points.  This provides great opportunities for snorkeling due to the ease of access and abundant sea life.  It is a popular spot for both beginners and experienced snorkelers due to the calm waters.

In addition, the wind usually blows from land to sea thus minimizing any wind waves.  However, paddleboarders need to be aware of the wind patterns that can blow you out to sea making it difficult to return should you get too far out on a windy day.

This area is generally known for its calm waters. However, there can be occasional dangerous surf breaking over the reef and on the beach.  Napili Bay is not known as a surfing area and most surfers go to Honolua Bay just a few miles to the north.

Water conditions can vary and there are times when the ocean can become unsafe, even in normally calm areas.  It is important to always check the local conditions before heading out.

Napili Weather

The bay is protected by the surrounding mountains from higher amounts of rainfall.  In fact, the tropical rainforest of Ioa Valley is located very close to Napili Bay just on the other side of the mountain. While is rains throughout the year, even in the summer, the most rain occurs between December and April as storms approach from the west.  Summer months will often experience light showers in the late afternoons, just enough to cool the air some.

Air temperatures are always pleasant and range from the mid 60s to the high 80s.  Rarely does it get over 90 degrees.  Ocean water temperatures vary from the low 70s in the winter to the low 80s in the summer.  Trade winds often blow hard from land to sea, however, Napili Bay is usually protected resulting in small wind waves and a calmer beach.

Hurricanes and tropical storms often influence the weather in Maui but directs hits are rare, especially in Maui as this island is protected by the Big Island of Hawaii.
