About the Poas Volcano

Poás Volcano is one of Costa Rica’s most famous natural attractions. Located in Poás Volcano National Park, it offers stunning views and unique landscapes. Visitors can witness one of the largest active craters in the world.

A turquoise lake fills the center, creating a striking contrast to the gray volcanic rock. Occasionally, steam and gas rise from the crater, reminding visitors of its active status. Several lookout points allow for photo opportunities.  Occasionally the park closes to visitors if the seismic activity level increases to the point where scientist believe there will be an eruption.

Lush cloud forests surround the volcano, creating a rich ecosystem. The park features well-maintained hiking trails. These trails wind the cloud forest, offering a chance to explore diverse plant life. Along the way, small volcanic vents and boiling mud pots can be seen.

Poas Weather

The Poas volcano sits at almost 9000 feet above sea level and is part of the mountain/volcano range that divides the Pacific west coast of Costa Rica with the eastern Caribbean side.  Therefore, this area experiences a log of rain due to the moist air that is pushed up the mountain slopes where is condenses and falls.

The canton (area) of Poas is lower and is at about 4000 feet above sea level.

The heaviest rains occurs between May and November, but this areas experiences rain throughout the year.

Temperatures in the canton range from the low 70s to low 80s during the day and low to mid 60s at night.  The temperatures on top of the volcano are significantly lower and can reach freezing.
