About the Arenal Volcano
Arenal Volcano is one of Costa Rica’s most famous landmarks and rises just over 5,300 feet above sea level.
For centuries, the volcano was thought to be dormant. However, in 1968, a massive eruption changed everything. Lava, ash, and gas covered nearby villages, especially the town of La Fortuna. Many people lost their lives, and the landscape was reshaped forever. After that, Arenal remained active for decades. Smaller eruptions and lava flows continued until 2010. Since then, it has been in a resting phase.
Outdoor activities attract nature lovers and adventure seekers. Hiking trails lead through lush forests filled with wildlife, flowers and tropical plants. Hot springs, heated by geothermal activity, provide a relaxing escape. Lake Arenal is perfect for kayaking, fishing, and paddleboarding. Thrill-seekers can enjoy zip-lining and waterfall rappelling.
Arenal/La Fortuna Weather
The Arenal volcano, and the nearby town of La Fortuna, are located in the middle of the Costa Rican rainforest. Rainfall occurs throughout the year and keeps everything lush and green. May through October experiences the heaviest rains that can last several days and nights straight. The drier months of January through April will experience more sunshine with rains mostly in the afternoon and early evening.
It is not unusual for this area to receive in excess of 100 inches of rain per year.
Temperature are mild to warm and range from the low 70s during the night to mostly 80s in the daytime.
Very heavy rain and flooding can occur if the weather is influenced by nearby tropical storms of hurricanes.
