About Santa Monica Beach
Santa Monica Beach is one of Southern California’s most iconic coastal destinations. Located along the Pacific Ocean, it offers golden sand, ocean views, and exciting waves. Surfers, swimmers, and beachgoers enjoy its vibrant atmosphere year-round.
The waves are typically gentle, ranging from 2 to 4 feet (0.6 to 1.2 meters) and are perfect for beginner and intermediate surfers. The consistent breaks make it a perfect place to learn how to surf. During summer, smaller swells create calmer waves, ideal for those just starting out.
In addition, larger waves can be found during the winter months. From November to March, swells generated from Pacific storms bring waves reaching up to 6 feet (1.8 meters). Experienced surfers often take advantage of these stronger conditions. The occasional storm swell can also create more powerful waves.
Santa Monica Beach offers beautiful weather most of the year. Summer temperatures range from 70°F to 80°F (21°C to 27°C). During winter, temperatures remain mild, between 50°F and 65°F (10°C to 18°C). The ocean water stays between 55°F and 68°F (13°C to 20°C), with the warmest temperatures in late summer that reach the mid to high 70s.
The Santa Monica Pier features an amusement park, restaurants, and shops. Visitors often enjoy biking along the beach path or exploring nearby parks. Lifeguards are stationed along the shore, ensuring safety for swimmers and surfers. However, water conditions can vary and there are times when the ocean can become unsafe, even in normally calm areas. It is important to always check the local conditions before heading out.
