About the Wedge

The Wedge is one of California’s most famous surf spots. Located in Newport Beach, it is known for its massive waves and powerful shore break. Surfers, bodyboarders, and spectators visit to experience the excitement.

First, the waves at The Wedge are unlike any other. A unique jetty formation causes waves to double in size, creating towering swells. This powerful wave action attracts skilled surfers and bodyboarders looking for a challenge.

In addition, the wave height changes throughout the year. During summer and early fall, swells from the south bring the biggest waves. On the largest days, waves can reach 20 to 30 feet (6 to 9 meters). These conditions make The Wedge one of the most intense surf spots in the world.

For safety reasons, only experienced surfers should enter the water. The strong currents and powerful waves can be dangerous. Lifeguards are on duty, but caution is always advised. Many visitors prefer to watch from the shore, enjoying the thrilling spectacle.

Moreover, The Wedge is a great place for photography. The massive waves and fearless surfers create stunning action shots. Sunsets over the Pacific Ocean add to the beauty of the scene.

Swimming at The Wedge is not recommended. The strong waves and unpredictable shore break make it unsafe for casual swimmers. However, nearby beaches offer calmer waters for those looking to swim.

With its towering waves, exciting surf action, and breathtaking views, The Wedge is a must-visit for ocean lovers. Whether watching from the shore or taking on the waves, this legendary surf spot offers unforgettable experiences.

Newport Beach Weather

Newport Beach and most of Southern California’s beach communities have some of the best weather in the world.  Temperatures remain mild throughout the winter and summer.

Most rain falls between December and April.  May and June are often very cloudy and cool as the marine layer covers the beach communities.  This is caused by the deserts warming up and pulling the clouds and fog over the coast.  There can be weeks without seeing any sun at all during this time of the year.  Often these two months are referred to as “May gray” and “June gloom”.

Summertime high temperatures are generally in the 70s and 80s with night time lows in the 60s.  Winter cools off with highs in the low to mid 60s and lows in the 50s during the night.  Rarely does the temperature exceed 90 degrees or fall into the 30s at night.

Occasionally a weather phenomena called a “Santa Ana” will drive temperatures near 100 degrees and are often accompanied by very high, near hurricane force, winds.

This area is not prone to high winds except when a large, strong storm moves through or a Santa Ana weather event happens.

Occasionally a tropical storm or hurricane will influence the weather but it is very rare to experience a direct hit in this area.
