About the Big Island of Hawaii

The big island of Hawaii is the largest of all the Hawaiian island chain at just over 4,000 square miles.  It is also home to two of the most active volcanoes in the Hawaii islands, Mauna Loa and Kilauea. At just over 13,000 feet in elevation, Mauna Loa last erupted in 2022.  Kilauea followed in December of 2024.  The Big Island’s location is the most southeastern of all the islands.  Therefore, it is more prone to hurricanes.  Because of the island’s location, large size, the Big Island often acts as a protective barrier to the other islands.  Maui benefits the most from this shield.

The weather on the Big Island of Hawaii is some of the best in the world.  Mild temperatures throughout the year make this a favorite destination for those that live in colder climates.  The island has numerous micro-climates with varying temperatures and rainfall depending on your location.  Some areas receive over 400 inches of rain every year while others are relatively dry.  In Kona, highs range from 81 in January to 87.  Lows temperatures range between 68 and 75.  While there is always rain somewhere on the island, the more widespread rainy season happens between November and April.
